Garbage & Recycling
All refuse, recycling and yard waste will be collected by Groot Industries. Materials should be placed at the curb prior to 6:00 a.m. on collection day.
Groot Industries will pick up an unlimited amount of household waste and recyclables which must be placed in a 95-gallon toter provided by Groot.
Households may put out one bulk item, per household, per week, at no cost. Bulk items are defined as large household items which one person can lift such as sofas, dressers, chairs, and tables. A mattress or box spring is considered 1 bulk item. Carpet needs to be rolled into 4’ long bundles and each bundle should not weigh more than 50 pounds. Groot Industries will collect up to 4 carpet bundles per week.
Groot Industries will not pick up white goods--appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines. If a resident wishes to dispose of these items, they should call Groot directly at 630-892-9294 to arrange a special pick-up which costs $35.00. per item. Residents must call and schedule this fee-based pick-up at least 24 hours in advance.

Landscape Waste:
Landscape waste stickers are required to be affixed to 30-gallon Kraft yard waste bags and any bundled yard waste. The cost of a sticker is $2.50, which started in 2021 and will continue until 2030. As an alternative option to the sticker, the yard water/compost subscription program allows residents to place both yard waste and food scrap compost in a 95-gallon cart designated for weekly collection. In partnership with the Village of Oswego, this program helps residents reduce the amount the amount of garbage being sent to area landfills. This optional program is available at a rate of $155.45 (2024) per season. Biodegradable food waste such as fruits and vegetables is permitted to be mixed with yard waste.
Collection will not be provided on the following holidays:
- Memorial Day, May 27, 2024
- Independence Day, July 4, 2024
- Labor Day, September 2, 2024
- Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2024
- Christmas (Observed) December 25, 2024
- New Year's Day, January 1, 2025
In the event that collection day falls on a holiday, collection will be provided one day later. This also applies for the rest of the days that week (if the holiday is on Tuesday, Monday’s collection will remain on Monday and then all the rest will be one day later.)
If the holiday should fall on a Sunday, Monday will be a holiday for Groot with service delayed one day the remainder of the week.
Refuse, recycling and yard waste are collected by different trucks on different routes. If your home is missed, please contact Public Works at 630-554-3242 or Groot at 630-892-9294 before noon the following day.

Spring, Fall and December Special Collections
Groot Industries provides a clean-up day in the spring and fall for Oswego residents. They will collect additional household waste, yard waste and bulk items for all Village residents, typically for one week in late April and one week in early November, on your normally scheduled garbage day, for free. No stickers are required during free cleanup week, however residents must still place yard waste in the 30-gallon kraft yard waste bags. Yard waste will not be accepted in plastic bags.
Winter Yard Waste Collection: Stickers are not required for this collection but leaves and other plant material must be placed in 30-gallon Kraft bags. Examples of yard waste include grass clippings, leaves, branches, limbs, weeds, logs and garden plants. Do not leave piles on the parkway or in the street. Place the Kraft bags, along with your garbage and recycling, at the curb by 6 a.m. on your regularly scheduled collection day.
